Ukrainian refugees in the UK fear they could be left homeless after the government reduced funding for people hosting them under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, according to The Guardian.

The scheme, launched after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, currently pays hosts £350 a month as a "thank you" payment for accommodating Ukrainian refugees. According to the report, this payment will be reduced to £100 next year, representing roughly a 70% cut to the funding for hosts.

The Homes for Ukraine scheme has provided support for 181,000 of the 234,000 Ukrainians who have sought sanctuary in the UK since the start of the war, according to the figures cited in the report.

Advocates for Ukrainian refugees have expressed concern that the reduced payment could discourage existing hosts from continuing to provide accommodation, potentially leaving some Ukrainian refugees without stable housing as a result.

The UK government has not been quoted in the available report explaining the rationale for the funding reduction or detailing what support, if any, would be offered to hosts or refugees affected by the change.

The funding change comes more than four years after the scheme's launch, as the war in Ukraine continues and questions persist in host countries, including the UK, about the long-term structure of support for Ukrainian refugees.
