Ukraine Says It Shot Down 254 of 285 Russian Drones Overnight

Ukraine's air defense forces neutralized 254 of the 285 drones launched by Russian forces during the day on September 30, according to Ukrainian state news agency Ukrinform, citing the country's air force.

The reported interception rate, roughly 89 percent, is broadly consistent with the level of success Ukrainian air defenses have claimed against Russian drone attacks throughout the war, which has increasingly relied on swarms of Shahed-type drones alongside missile strikes to target Ukrainian infrastructure and military positions.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately detail what happened to the remaining drones that were not intercepted, including whether they struck targets, were lost due to electronic jamming, or landed without detonating. Russian officials have not issued a public comment on the reported figures.

Ukraine has relied on a mix of domestically produced and Western-supplied air defense systems, along with mobile fire teams and electronic warfare units, to counter the growing scale of Russian drone attacks. Kyiv and its allies have in recent months worked to expand production of interceptor drones and munitions specifically designed to counter the low-cost Shahed-style drones Russia has deployed in large numbers.

The overnight barrage adds to a pattern of near-daily aerial attacks that have persisted through the war, with both sides continuing to exchange long-range strikes as the conflict enters its fourth winter without a resolution in sight.
