Ukraine Rejects Russian 'Elections' Held in Occupied Territories
Kyiv says voting organized by Moscow in occupied Ukrainian regions has no legal standing and does not extend Russian jurisdiction over the territories.
Ukraine has condemned "elections" conducted by Russia in temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, according to a statement reported by Ukrinform, the Ukrainian state news agency.
The statement said the votes are illegal and "create no legal basis whatsoever for extending Russian jurisdiction over Ukrainian territory," according to Ukrinform.
Kyiv has consistently maintained that any electoral or administrative processes carried out by Russian authorities in occupied areas of Ukraine violate international law and Ukraine's sovereignty over the territories, which remain internationally recognized as Ukrainian.
Ukrinform did not specify further details of the statement, including which body issued it or the precise territories referenced. The report did not include additional comment from Russian officials on the matter.
Ukraine and its Western allies have previously described similar voting exercises organized by Russian-installed administrations in occupied regions as shams, saying they are conducted without independent oversight and under conditions of military occupation.
