UK Sees Surge in Anti-Migrant Vigilante Groups Over Past 18 Months

At least 28 anti-migrant vigilante groups have formed across the UK in the last 18 months, according to analysis by the Guardian, ranging from unauthorised street patrols claiming to protect women and children to groups harassing migrants in France and blocking ports.

The Guardian reported that the number of active groups has surged since the summer of 2025, with activity spanning from Belfast to the south coast of England.

The rise comes amid widespread concerns over fresh disorder following an incident last weekend in which black-clad vigilantes, many wearing balaclavas, blocked roads in Portsmouth and Dover.

According to the Guardian's report, many of the groups "use community protection as a cover for racist thuggery," raising alarm among observers about the potential for further unrest.
