UK inflation rose above 3% in August, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), as sharp increases in motor fuel and transport prices added new strain on British households.

The consumer prices index (CPI) measure of inflation climbed from 2.9% in July to 3.1% in August, the ONS said. The rise matched forecasts made by City economists.

The increase was driven primarily by motor fuel prices, which rose by almost a quarter, according to the data. The ONS attributed the surge in fuel and transport costs to disruptions triggered by the Iran war.

The renewed rise in inflation comes as financial markets assess the likelihood of a change in interest rates. According to market predictions cited by the Guardian, there is a one-in-five chance of a quarter-point interest rate rise when the Bank of England announces its decision on Thursday.

Higher fuel costs typically feed through into wider transport and delivery expenses, adding pressure on household budgets already affected by broader cost-of-living challenges.

The Bank of England's upcoming decision will be closely watched as policymakers weigh the inflation data against other economic indicators in determining the future path of interest rates.
