The UK government has said it will offer clearer guidance to university students taking out student loans, warning them that the terms and conditions of their loans could change, according to the Guardian.

The update follows criticism over a three-year threshold repayment freeze, which prompted scrutiny of how the government communicates loan terms to students.

In July, a report by MPs found that promotional materials, including slideshows comparing student loan repayments to the cost of a mobile phone contract, and YouTube videos aimed at prospective students, did not mention that the conditions of the loans could be altered after they were taken out. The report characterized this omission as amounting to mis-selling by the government.

In response, the government said it would revise its guidance so that students are better informed about the terms they are agreeing to when taking out loans, including the possibility that repayment conditions could change in the future.

The Guardian reported that the government's announcement is intended to address concerns raised by MPs and improve transparency for current and prospective university students regarding the nature of their financial commitments.
