UK Diesel Prices Hit Record High as Housebuilder Stocks Rise on New Homes Scheme

Diesel prices across the United Kingdom have reached a record high of 199.18 pence per litre, according to rolling business coverage from The Guardian, adding pressure to hauliers and businesses reliant on road freight.

The Guardian's report cited Dr Jonathan Owens, an operations and supply chain expert at the University of Salford, who said businesses should brace for further increases in diesel costs. Owens illustrated the potential impact using the example of a heavy goods vehicle travelling 80,000 miles a year at eight miles per gallon, which would consume roughly 45,460 litres of diesel annually; at £3 per litre, the fuel bill for such a vehicle would run to about £136,400, compared with roughly £90,900 at £2 per litre.

Scaled across a fleet of 100 vehicles, that difference amounts to an additional fuel bill of more than £4.5 million, costs Owens said are likely to be passed on to consumers who rely on goods transported by diesel-powered lorries and vans.

The report noted that a sustained drop in global oil prices over several weeks, rather than a short-term dip, would be needed to bring relief at the pumps, and pointed to talk of a renewed deal to ease disruption in the Strait of Hormuz as a possible, though uncertain, source of relief for oil supplies.
