UK AI Policy Architect Steps Down Amid Anthropic Conflict-of-Interest Concerns

Matt Clifford, the architect of the UK government's approach to artificial intelligence policy, has stepped down from his role as chair of the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (Aria) following concerns from senior MPs about a conflict of interest, according to The Guardian.

Clifford announced last week that he was taking a full-time position with Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI company behind the Claude chatbot. In his new role, he is reportedly set to lead the company's engagement with governments outside the United States, including the UK.

Despite the new position, Clifford had initially retained his leadership post at Aria, the UK's "moonshot" science and technology research unit, which funds frontier science and technology projects. The Guardian reported that senior MPs described the dual role as a "clear conflict of interest," given Anthropic's commercial interests in AI policy that Clifford's government-linked position could influence.

Following the disquiet from lawmakers, Clifford was forced to stand down from the Aria chairmanship, the report said.
