Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will seek another term through an early election, according to one of his advisers, cited by AFP on Thursday.

According to this source, this strategy would allow Mr. Erdogan to circumvent the Turkish Constitution, which in principle prohibits him from running if he completes his current term.

The Turkish Constitution indeed limits consecutive presidential terms to two for the same person, except in the event that early elections are called by Parliament, a provision that opens the door to a new candidacy.

Neither the precise timing of a possible early election nor the exact modalities of this approach have been specified at this stage by the presidential office.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan has led Turkey for more than two decades, first as Prime Minister and then, since 2014, as President.
