Turner Prize Exhibition Opens at MIMA Middlesbrough Featuring Kira Freije
This year's shortlist show at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art has drawn strong attention to sculptor Kira Freije's installation of life-size figures.
This year's Turner Prize exhibition, hosted at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), has opened with four shortlisted artists presenting new work, drawing particular attention to sculptor Kira Freije.
Freije's installation occupies its own floor of the gallery, separated from the other three shortlisted artists' work by a staircase. Organisers said the separation was needed in part because a fine mist used in her installation could potentially affect the more fragile materials used in neighbouring exhibits.
The centrepiece of Freije's contribution is a group of 33 life-size sculptures depicting tragicomic, steampunk-style humanoid figures, arranged together within a misty, dramatic setting. Critics reviewing the show have described the installation as having a distinct atmosphere and scale compared with the other shortlisted works.
The Turner Prize, established in 1984, remains one of the most closely watched awards in contemporary British art, recognising a British-based artist for an outstanding exhibition or presentation in the preceding year. Each edition rotates its host venue among UK galleries, with this year's exhibition held in Middlesbrough.
The exhibition remains open to the public at MIMA, with the prize winner to be announced following the judging period. The shortlist and accompanying works are expected to continue drawing visitors and critical commentary throughout the exhibition's run.
