US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States had reached a deal with Denmark to expand its military presence in Greenland, while stating the agreement would respect both Danish and Greenlandic sovereignty.

Denmark confirmed that the agreement is expected to be signed next week during the United Nations General Assembly, but said it still requires approval from the Danish parliament before it can take effect.

Details of the specific terms of the expanded military presence were not immediately disclosed by either side.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been the subject of repeated interest from Trump, who has previously spoken of US ambitions regarding the strategically located Arctic island. The territory holds significant geopolitical importance due to its location and has hosted a US military base for decades under existing defense arrangements between Washington and Copenhagen.

Neither the White House nor Danish officials provided further specifics on the scope of the military expansion at the time of the announcement.
