Three Renoir paintings stolen from museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, valued at nine million euros
Two burglars broke into the Renoir Museum near Nice on Tuesday morning, making off with four canvases before fleeing and being pursued by police, who recovered one of the works.
Three paintings by artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir were stolen Tuesday from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, a town located near Nice on the Côte d'Azur, according to reports by France 24.
According to the town's mayor, two individuals broke into the museum shortly before six o'clock in the morning. They left with four paintings in total before being chased by police.
During their escape, the burglars dropped one of the stolen canvases, which was recovered. Three works therefore remain missing.
The value of the stolen paintings is estimated at approximately nine million euros, according to details in the case.
The exact circumstances of the burglary and the identity of those responsible have not been disclosed at this stage. An investigation is underway to recover the works and identify those behind the theft.
