Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward to Ban Short-Term Rentals in Residential and Cultural Areas

Shinjuku, a Tokyo ward popular with foreign tourists, will ban visitors from using thousands of short-term rental accommodations following a wave of complaints about visitor behavior, according to Japanese media reports cited by The Guardian.
The ward, home to the Kabukicho nightlife district and the world's busiest railway station, will prevent the use of private lodgings in residential areas and near schools and important cultural sites, the reports said.
Local residents have complained about tourists disposing of rubbish improperly and being too noisy, according to the report.
The move is described as the latest sign that Japan's tolerance for mass tourism is wearing thin, as the country continues to see high volumes of foreign visitors in popular districts.
