Todd Boehly Departs Chelsea Ownership Group as Clearlake Capital Consolidates Control

The American businessman's exit from the Premier League club is expected to have limited day-to-day impact but may carry weight for stadium redevelopment plans, according to The Guardian.

Todd Boehly has left his ownership position at Chelsea, according to a report by The Guardian, marking the departure of a figure who had already seen his influence at the London club diminish in recent years.

The report states that Boehly's exit, alongside fellow investor Mark Walter, is unlikely to change much in Chelsea's boardroom on a day-to-day basis, as Clearlake Capital had already established itself as the majority owner and primary decision-maker at the club.

Clearlake Capital, the US private equity firm founded by Behdad Eghbali and José E Feliciano, led the BlueCo consortium that purchased Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for £2.5bn in 2022, according to the report. Boehly, Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss had held an equal share of a 38.5% stake in the club as part of that consortium.

The Guardian reports that the trio of minority investors had "drifted into irrelevance" in the years since the takeover, with Boehly's most notable period of hands-on involvement coming during what the report describes as a "doomed foray" into managing Chelsea's transfer market activity.

While the departure is not expected to significantly alter the club's operational structure, the report suggests it could carry greater significance for Chelsea's plans regarding a new stadium, though specific details on how the change might affect those plans were not elaborated in the available reporting.

Boehly's exit represents the end of a four-year period during which he was a public face of Chelsea's ownership, even as his practical influence over the club's affairs waned, according to the report.
