Thunderstorms kill at least one in Spain; Japan prepares for typhoon
Intense, slow-moving storms brought severe flooding to eastern Spain on Wednesday, with at least one death reported in Valencia and Barcelona.
Thunderstorms swept across eastern Spain on Wednesday afternoon, beginning over Castilla-La Mancha before moving to the coast and stalling overnight. The storms produced torrential rainfall, strong winds and large hail, causing widespread flooding in Valencia and Barcelona. Weather stations west of Barcelona recorded more than 100mm of rain in a few hours, with some areas receiving 70mm in just 30 minutes early Thursday morning.
The flooding submerged cars and roads across the region, prompting flight cancellations. At least one person has died as a result of the severe weather.
