Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, is set to begin a three-day visit to France on Friday, an occasion drawing renewed attention to his family's roots in the country. Though he has visited France only rarely and holds no particular personal attachment to the country, genealogical accounts trace part of his ancestry to Normandy, through descent from immigrants who left the region generations ago.

Leo XIV's family history includes a line traced back to Suzanne Fontaine, whose descendants eventually settled in the United States, part of the broader story of French emigration to North America over the centuries. As the first pope to hold US nationality, his election has prompted particular interest in aspects of his background that connect him, however distantly, to European roots.

Ahead of his visit, French commentators and historians have highlighted several figures from French spiritual and religious history in which the pope has reportedly shown interest, even though his direct personal ties to the country remain limited.

The visit is expected to draw significant public and media attention in France, both for its historical significance as a rare papal trip and for the curiosity surrounding the family history of a pope whose nationality broke centuries of precedent for the papacy.
