Syria's al-Sharaa tells UN Golan Heights will remain Syrian territory
President Ahmed al-Sharaa's remarks at the UN General Assembly come after Colombia's government recognized Israeli sovereignty over the occupied territory last month.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa told the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday that the Golan Heights will remain Syrian territory, days after Colombia's government recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Israeli-occupied region.
The Golan Heights, a strategically significant plateau, has been considered by the United Nations to be Syrian territory under Israeli military occupation since Israel seized most of the area during the 1967 Middle East war. Israel later annexed the territory in a move not recognized by most of the international community.
Colombia's government recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights last month, a decision that broke with the broader international consensus on the territory's status and drew attention from other governments in the region.
Al-Sharaa's remarks at the UN General Assembly underscored Syria's continued position that the Golan Heights belongs to Syria, despite decades of Israeli control over most of the territory.
