Sydney council bans AI smart glasses at public pools over filming concerns

Canterbury-Bankstown council votes to prohibit the devices at local swimming facilities, citing fears of covert recording in change rooms and pools.

Canterbury-Bankstown, one of Sydney's largest councils, voted Tuesday to ban AI smart glasses at its public pools, joining Brisbane and Yarra in prohibiting the technology. The council cited mounting concerns about potential misuse for secret filming in change rooms, pools and around schools.

Mayor Bilal El-Hayek described the devices as "pervert glasses," indicating the council's view of the safety risks posed by wearable recording technology. Councillors said residents have been raising concerns about people secretly filming at swimming facilities.
