The television series "Star Trek" turns 60 years old on Tuesday, according to a report from NPR News.

The original show aired for only three seasons after its debut, NPR reported, but it went on to spawn numerous prequels and sequels across both television and film.

Despite the original series' relatively short run, the franchise has maintained a cult following over the six decades since its premiere, according to the report.
