South Korean President Lee Jae-myung called for renewed dialogue and cooperation with North Korea during an address to the United Nations General Assembly, framing it as an extension of an outstretched hand toward peace on the Korean Peninsula.

In his remarks, Lee reportedly urged a fresh approach to engagement between the two Koreas, which have remained technically at war since the 1950s armistice that ended active fighting without a formal peace treaty. The call for dialogue reflects an effort by the South Korean leader to reset tensions that have periodically flared between Seoul and Pyongyang.

Broader global priorities

Beyond the Korean Peninsula, Lee also used his UN platform to back reform of the UN Security Council, a longstanding subject of debate among member states over the body's composition and veto powers. He additionally called for stronger global cooperation on climate change, aligning South Korea with other nations pushing for more coordinated international climate action.

The address placed South Korea's regional security concerns alongside broader multilateral priorities, an approach consistent with previous appearances by South Korean leaders at the annual UN gathering.

North Korea did not immediately respond to the overture, according to the available reporting, and it remains unclear whether Pyongyang will engage with the proposal for renewed dialogue.
