South Australian Premier Pledges to Save Steel Making After Whyalla Blast Furnace Closure
Peter Malinauskas says the state has a plan to recapitalise the Whyalla plant in conjunction with federal government to preserve Australia's structural steel-making capacity.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas told ABC News Breakfast that while the closure of a major blast furnace at Whyalla was met with disappointment and heartbreak, there is optimism about steel making continuing in the state. Malinauskas noted the furnace, built in 1965, has not undergone major realignment in 20 years and requires recapitalisation to remain viable.
Malinauskas warned that losing the facility would mean Australia loses structural steel-making capacity entirely. "If we lose this capacity, this country doesn't have structural steel-making capacity and we can't afford that," he said, adding that a recapitalisation plan is underway with the federal government.
