Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Heintschel, regarded as one of the top young quarterbacks in college football, will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL, sources told ESPN on Saturday.
The injury is a significant setback for Pitt's offense, which has relied heavily on Heintschel's play this season as he established himself among the sport's most promising young passers.
No timetable for his return has been made public beyond the season-ending designation, and Pitt will need to lean on its depth at quarterback for the remainder of the schedule.
The university had not issued an official statement on the injury at the time of the initial report, with the news first surfacing through sources speaking to ESPN.
