Pirate activity off the Horn of Africa has resurged, with eight hijackings reported since late April, including two vessels seized in August, according to The Guardian. The incidents targeted an oil tanker with Iranian ties and the Cameroon-flagged Lutuf, which carried military equipment for Turkey.
The Guardian attributes the resurgence to a convergence of factors: shipping industry disruptions caused by the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, and renewed political instability within Somalia itself.
