Hundreds of small UK television production companies are operating with cash reserves so limited that a filming overrun or a delay to a series could push them into insolvency, according to an industry body.

Indielab, which represents independent TV producers, analysed Companies House accounts filings from more than 200 of the estimated 800 independent television production companies in the UK. The analysis found a median cash reserve of £42,000 among these firms, an amount the industry body said would not be sufficient to cover common production disruptions such as filming overruns or delays to a series.

The report found that 40% of the companies analysed face running out of cash within the next two years, according to Indielab.

The industry body attributed the financial fragility in part to budget cuts imposed by broadcasters on independent production companies, which it said are compounding the risks posed by already thin cash buffers.

The Guardian reported that the findings raise concerns about the long-term sustainability of the UK's independent television production sector, which relies on commissions from broadcasters to fund ongoing operations.
