Sharon Horgan has spoken about her new HBO series 'Youth', describing how the show draws on her own experiences following her divorce and turning 50, according to an interview published by The Guardian.

Horgan told The Guardian that when she pitched the series to HBO, she summarized its premise in a single phrase: "sandwich generation." The show's protagonist, Alex, is portrayed as being caught between raising a teenage son and caring for two elderly parents, according to the report.

According to Horgan, she had been developing some of the show's characters for roughly five years before pitching them to HBO. "Honestly, I said about three sentences and a week later, they said yes," she said, adding that she had "never had that experience before" in her career.

The series explores themes including recent divorce, the challenges of dating later in life, and a demanding creative professional career, as described in the source interview. Horgan said that turning 50 marked a significant shift in her own life. "Everything just changed for me when I hit my 50s," she told The Guardian. "I was very bamboozled but I really had a hunger to make time count."

Horgan clarified that not all situations depicted in the show are drawn directly from her own post-divorce experience, noting that she also incorporated stories from friends. The Guardian's report characterizes the series as offering a distinctive portrayal compared to other depictions of women navigating midlife responsibilities, citing what it described as an "urgency and valour" in the show's approach.
