Second child dies after alleged Blue Mountains stabbing; mother faces new murder charge

A second child has died following an alleged stabbing attack in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Australian police said, five days after the incident that also left another sibling hospitalized.

The one-year-old victim died in a Sydney hospital, according to police. A three-year-old sibling who was also injured in the alleged attack remains in critical condition.

Bystanders discovered three children and a 42-year-old woman with stab wounds inside a vehicle at Valley Heights in the Blue Mountains on Sunday afternoon, police said. The woman, alleged to be the children's mother, was taken into custody in connection with the incident.

Following the death of the one-year-old, police have laid an additional murder charge against the woman. Further details of the charges have not been released.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.
