Scottish baritone Henry Herford has died at the age of 79, according to The Guardian.

Herford was noted for the breadth of his repertoire, including performances of often-neglected works, and for his warm, appealing tonal quality, The Guardian reported. He performed more than 70 roles in opera during his career.

He began his career with the Glyndebourne Opera Chorus from 1977 to 1978, where he also took on small solo roles, including the Forester in "The Cunning Little Vixen" and the Speaker in "The Magic Flute," according to the obituary. He returned to Glyndebourne in 1981 to play Demetrius in "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and later performed Boris Pasternak in Nigel Osborne's "Electrification of the Soviet Union" in 1987-88.
