Saudi-led coalition forces intercepted a drone launched by Yemen's Houthi movement near the city of Mecca, according to a coalition spokesman cited by Anadolu Agency.
The spokesman said the wreckage of the intercepted drone fell south of Mecca, one of Islam's holiest cities and a major pilgrimage destination.
He described the incident as the second attempt by Houthi forces to target Mecca since 2017, though further details on the timing or nature of the earlier attempt were not immediately provided.
The coalition, which has been engaged in military operations against Houthi forces in Yemen, did not provide additional details on casualties or damage resulting from the intercepted drone.
The Houthi movement, which controls large parts of Yemen including the capital Sanaa, has previously claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, saying such attacks are in response to the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia has not issued additional public comment beyond the coalition spokesman's remarks reported by Anadolu Agency.
