Russian Ministry Says Foreign Tourists Spend 4.5 Times More in Moscow Than Locals
Deputy Economic Development Minister Dmitry Vakhrukov said most tourists from Asia and the Middle East spend heavily on Moscow's cafes and restaurants.
Foreign tourists visiting Moscow spend roughly 4.5 times more than Russian residents do while in the city, according to Russia's Ministry of Economic Development.
Deputy Minister Dmitry Vakhrukov said that around 95% of tourists from Asia and the Middle East visit local cafes and restaurants during their trips to Russia, according to TASS.
The figures point to the growing role of tourists from Asian and Middle Eastern countries in Moscow's hospitality and food-service sector, at a time when the Russian government has been promoting the country as a tourist destination amid continued Western travel restrictions tied to the war in Ukraine.
Vakhrukov's comments did not include a breakdown of specific spending figures by nationality, nor details on which categories of goods and services beyond dining accounted for the reported gap.
Russian officials have periodically highlighted rising numbers of visitors from Asia and the Middle East as evidence of the country's efforts to diversify its tourism base.
