Russia Strikes Kyiv's Northern Bridge as German Chancellor Visits in Show of Support

Russia struck another major bridge in Kyiv as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the Ukrainian capital on an unannounced visit intended to underline Germany's support for Ukraine, according to the Guardian.

A Russian drone hit Kyiv's Northern Bridge over the Dnipro River, marking the fourth consecutive day that Russia has targeted bridges used by thousands of residents commuting between the city's two banks.

Footage shows the strike

Video footage showed cars driving across the bridge as the drone plunged into the roadway and exploded in a burst of fire. Two people were injured in the strike, according to Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko.

The attack occurred shortly after Merz's arrival in the city, with the timing drawing attention to the risks faced by officials and residents alike during ongoing Russian strikes on the capital's infrastructure.

A pattern of targeting bridges

The strike on the Northern Bridge is part of a broader pattern in which Russia has repeatedly targeted bridges across the Dnipro River in Kyiv over several consecutive days, disrupting a key transport link for residents who rely on it to move between the city's two sides.
