Russia's Ukraine War Death Toll Rises by 1,560 in a Day, Kyiv Says

Ukraine's military said Russian combat losses in its war against Ukraine increased by 1,560 personnel over the past 24 hours, bringing the cumulative estimated toll since February 24, 2022, to approximately 1,522,440, according to figures published by the state news agency Ukrinform.

The tally, compiled by Ukraine's General Staff, is updated daily and is intended to track the cumulative human cost to Russian forces since the start of the full-scale invasion more than four years ago. Ukrainian authorities have consistently published such figures throughout the conflict as part of their public reporting on the war's progress.

These estimates are generated by Ukraine's own military and have not been independently verified by neutral third parties. Russia's Ministry of Defence does not publish comparable regular casualty figures and has periodically disputed Ukrainian estimates as inflated. Independent analysts have noted that all sides in the conflict face significant challenges in providing fully verifiable casualty data, and outside estimates of Russian losses have varied.

The war, now well into its fifth year, has caused enormous casualties on both sides along with widespread destruction of infrastructure in Ukraine. Both militaries continue to report daily updates on personnel and equipment losses as the conflict continues without a comprehensive peace settlement.

Ukrainian officials have said publishing the daily casualty estimates is intended to convey the scale of losses Russia is incurring and to bolster domestic and international support for Ukraine's continued resistance. The figures cover personnel losses only and are typically accompanied by separate tallies of destroyed military equipment, including tanks, artillery systems and aircraft.
