Russia's Foreign Ministry Says UN Report Reflects Western, Ukrainian Position on Bucha

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the United Nations has upheld the positions of Western countries and Ukraine regarding the events in Bucha rather than conducting an independent investigation, according to TASS, a Russian state news agency.

Zakharova said that for several years, authorities have been unable to provide lists identifying the victims in Bucha, according to TASS. She said that despite this, claims have been made asserting the victims were civilians and that the version of events presented by what she referred to as "the Kiev regime" is being treated as established fact.

TASS did not specify which particular UN report or statement prompted Zakharova's remarks, nor did it provide further detail on the timing or context of her comments.

The events in Bucha, a town near Kiev, became a focal point of international attention after Russian forces withdrew from the area in early 2022. Ukrainian authorities, along with independent journalists and international human rights organizations, documented the deaths of civilians in the town following the Russian withdrawal. Russia has consistently denied responsibility for civilian deaths in Bucha and has previously characterized reports of atrocities there as fabricated.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly disputed international assessments of events in Ukraine since the start of the conflict in February 2022, often characterizing Western and Ukrainian accounts as coordinated narratives rather than independently verified findings.
