Russia and Belarus Unveil Prototype Lithography Machine

Russia and Belarus have rolled out a prototype lithography machine, a critical tool in the manufacture of semiconductor chips, according to Russian state news agency TASS.

Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said the device incorporates a proprietary excimer laser developed specifically for the machine, a component he said places Russia among a narrow group of countries that possess the underlying technology.

Lithography machines are used to etch microscopic circuit patterns onto silicon wafers and are considered one of the most technologically demanding parts of chip production. The global market for advanced lithography equipment has long been dominated by a small number of manufacturers, and access to the technology has become a point of geopolitical significance amid export controls imposed by Western governments.

TASS did not report specifics on the prototype’s technical capabilities relative to leading commercial systems, or a timeline for when the machine might move toward production use.
