RLPO/Manze Prom review: All-British program features Britten, Vaughan Williams, and world premiere

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic performed a concert centered on over a century of British music at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Conductor Andrew Manze programmed career-spanning works by Vaughan Williams, a nimble rendition of Britten's Violin Concerto performed by Simone Lamsma, and the world premiere of Carmel Smickersgill's A Brick Thrown With Love.
Smickersgill's work, which imagines an act of protest from three perspectives—the idea itself, the affected community, and the person responsible—features a cheeky clarinet theme in its opening movement that is mocked, distorted and hijacked by the orchestra. The piece includes a climax in the second part and a third section with syncopated brass that propels toward a brutal ending.
