Renewed Fighting in Ethiopia's Tigray Region Raises Fears of Wider Spillover
A Horn of Africa expert warns that the resumption of conflict in Tigray could destabilize neighboring parts of the region.

Fighting has resumed in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, reviving concerns about a conflict that devastated the area between 2020 and 2022 and raising new questions about the stability of the broader Horn of Africa.
In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Horn of Africa expert Martin Plaut warned that the renewed violence carries the risk of spreading beyond Ethiopia's borders, given the region's history of cross-border tensions and overlapping political and ethnic ties.
A Region Prone to Spillover
The Horn of Africa has repeatedly seen conflicts in one country reverberate into neighboring states, whether through refugee flows, cross-border militia activity or shifting alliances among regional governments. Plaut's warning reflects concern that a reignited Tigray conflict could follow a similar pattern.
The 2020-2022 war in Tigray, fought between Ethiopia's federal government and forces aligned with the Tigray People's Liberation Front, killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions before a peace agreement was signed in late 2022. Tensions in the region have simmered since then, with reports of unresolved disputes over territory, security arrangements and political representation.
Details on the scale and location of the renewed fighting were not immediately available. Analysts and regional observers are expected to monitor closely whether the situation escalates further or whether diplomatic efforts can contain it before it draws in neighboring countries.
The Horn of Africa already hosts several overlapping security concerns, including instability in Sudan and Somalia, making any fresh escalation in Ethiopia a matter of heightened regional and international attention.
