Red alert issued in Catalonia over flood risk from heavy rain and small hurricane-like storm

Spanish authorities issued a red weather alert in Catalonia due to flood risk linked to heavy rain and a small hurricane-like storm system, according to Euronews.

The report said a 102-year-old woman died and approximately 90 people were rescued in Madrigueras, in the Albacete province, after a flash flood that dropped 142 litres of rain per square meter in the area.

Euronews said the rains were expected to continue through the weekend, with the possibility that a low-pressure system, known in Spain as a "DANA," could form over the western Iberian Peninsula on Sunday.

Spain uses a color-coded weather alert system, with red representing the highest level of risk, typically prompting local authorities to issue warnings and mobilize emergency services.

Spain has experienced several severe flooding events linked to intense autumn storm systems in recent years, with authorities urging residents in affected regions to avoid unnecessary travel during active alerts.
