Reader Warns Proportional Representation Could Backfire for Labour

A letter published in The Guardian argues that a shift toward proportional representation, reportedly being pushed forward by Andy Burnham, could prove damaging for the Labour party.

The writer, who says their views are informed by knowledge of both Italian voting systems and British politics, contends that Britain's first-past-the-post system remains "the lesser of two evils" compared with proportional alternatives.

Drawing on experience of proportional representation in Italy, the letter argues that such systems can drive a wedge between members of parliament and their constituents, reward tribalism, and leave large portions of the electorate dependent on the demands of smaller parties.

The letter also suggests that proportional systems can force parties into unstable coalition governments, and that voters under such systems do not necessarily feel better represented as a result.
