Bafel Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the Iranian foreign ministry in Tehran, according to a report by Iran's state news agency IRNA.
The report, published by IRNA, did not provide further details on the topics discussed during the meeting or the context surrounding the visit.
The PUK is one of the two dominant political parties in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region, alongside the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). Talabani has led the PUK, which has historically maintained close ties with Tehran, for several years.
Iran shares a border with Iraq's Kurdistan Region and has longstanding political, economic and security ties with Kurdish parties in the area. Meetings between Iranian officials and Iraqi Kurdish leaders have occurred periodically in the past.
