The trial of Rachida Dati, mayor of Paris's 7th arrondissement and former minister, opened Wednesday before French courts. The former justice minister is being tried for "corruption," according to the charges brought by prosecutors, for allegedly receiving 900,000 euros from Renault-Nissan between 2010 and 2012, when the company was led by Carlos Ghosn.
According to Le Monde, Rachida Dati's lawyers made repeated attempts from the outset of proceedings to postpone questioning of their client on the substance of the case.
Carlos Ghosn, former CEO of Renault and Nissan, is also facing trial for corruption in this matter. The ex-executive, who now lives in Lebanon after fleeing Japanese justice in 2019, will be tried in absentia, the newspaper notes.
The case concerns payments that Rachida Dati allegedly received from the automotive group while she was a European Parliament member, purportedly in exchange for consulting services whose actual delivery is disputed by prosecutors.
The trial, which is expected to continue in the coming weeks, is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched judicial cases of the fall, given the prominence of the two main figures involved and the significance of the issues surrounding the former head of the Renault-Nissan alliance.
