The Paris Correctional Court has been examining for two weeks the operations of a smuggling network suspected of organizing, in November 2021, the departure of 33 people aboard a makeshift vessel bound for the United Kingdom, reports Le Monde.
According to the newspaper, this crossing resulted in the death of 31 of the 33 people on board, making it the deadliest migrant shipwreck ever recorded in the Channel.
The proceedings before the Paris court focus on the organization of these trafficking networks, described by Le Monde as operating through both violence inflicted on those seeking to make the crossing and financial profit motives.
The trial is intended to establish responsibility within the network implicated in organizing this clandestine passage to British shores, according to information reported by Le Monde.
