Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun received a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump, following Aoun's visit to the White House on July 21, according to Lebanon's National News Agency.
In the letter, Trump said it was "an honor to welcome" Aoun to the White House for what he described as "a truly historic visit," noting it was the first by a Lebanese head of state in nearly two decades. Trump said he admired Aoun's "decisive leadership on behalf of Lebanon and its people" at a time of conflict in the Middle East.
Trump also thanked Aoun for awarding him the National Order of the Cedar, Grand Cordon rank, calling the gesture "an exceptional honor" that he said embodies "Lebanon's proud spirit," and said he would cherish it as a symbol of shared commitment to peace, security and prosperity.
Best wishes extended
Trump said U.S. First Lady Melania Trump joined him in extending best wishes to President Aoun, First Lady Nehmat Aoun and their family.
