2027 Presidential Race: The Primary Hypothesis Continues to Stir the Right and Center Bloc
As several Macronist figures and Republicans fear being shut out of the runoff, the idea of an organized selection process is resurfacing, despite Édouard Philippe's stated opposition.

The prospect of a 2027 presidential election without a representative from the center bloc or the right making it to the runoff is reviving debate over organizing a primary, according to Le Monde. Several political figures see it as a way to prevent candidate fragmentation that could prove fatal.
According to the newspaper, Macronist figures as well as Republican leaders are advocating for an organized selection mechanism among the various contenders from these political families. The stated objective would be to designate a single candidate capable of competing against the forces deemed dominant in the electoral landscape.
Édouard Philippe, cited by Le Monde, flatly refuses to consider this option. The former prime minister opposes any form of primary, though the newspaper does not detail his precise reasons for this stance.
Conversely, Gabriel Attal and Bruno Retailleau would be letting the idea "take root," in the terms reported by the newspaper, without formally committing to it. This more open position reflects the uncertainties currently affecting the right and center bloc regarding the best strategy to adopt for the 2027 presidential election.
Le Monde emphasizes that the question of how to select a common candidate remains a source of tension among the various figures likely to run, just over a year before the election.
