Police have arrested far-right activist Daniel Thomas on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life, two days after he filmed himself slashing the side of a migrant dinghy in the middle of the English Channel while a rescuer was on board.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said in a statement that a 37-year-old man of no fixed abode was arrested on Wednesday night on suspicion of offences under section 11 of the Aviation and Maritime Security Act 1990, which covers destroying ships or fixed platforms or endangering their safety.
Thomas, described as an anti-migrant activist, had circulated footage of himself cutting into the side of the dinghy while it was in the Channel, with a rescuer reportedly present on board at the time.
The arrest follows scrutiny of the incident after the video was shared publicly. Police have not yet indicated when Thomas is expected to appear in court or provided further details of the investigation.
The case comes amid heightened attention on Channel crossings and the safety of migrants and rescue personnel attempting them, with the incident drawing condemnation over the risk posed to those on board the vessel.
