Photographers Rona Bar and Ofek Avshalom Discuss Portrait of Mother and Daughter Exploring Jewish Identity
The duo describe how a chance meeting with performance artist Lois and her mother Carey led to a striking image made for their project Proof of Existence.
Photographers Rona Bar and Ofek Avshalom have described the story behind one of their photographs, an image of performance artist Lois and her mother Carey, in an interview published by The Guardian.
According to the photographers, the pair were found while searching for subjects for their project Proof of Existence, a series that involves transforming models into surreal or exaggerated characters based on aspects of themselves before photographing them in everyday settings.
Bar and Avshalom said they contacted Lois after seeing her work on Instagram. Upon visiting her home and meeting her mother, Carey, they said they became intrigued by the relationship between the two women and by the house itself.
The photographers said the intention behind the image was to show how Lois and Carey express their Jewish identity in a non-traditional way. They described the pair as artists whose home is filled with art, saying that the interests of mother and daughter appeared to spill from their bodies onto the walls in the form of artwork, motifs and symbols.
Bar and Avshalom said the house itself felt alive, with the story of Lois and Carey visible throughout the space.
