Peter Max, the American artist whose vivid, swirling pop art style helped define the visual language of the “flower power” movement, has died at the age of 88, according to a statement from his son, Adam Max.
Adam Max confirmed his father died on Monday in a written statement released on Wednesday. No cause of death was given.
Max's colorful, psychedelic designs became instantly recognizable symbols of the optimism and cultural upheaval of the 1960s. His work extended far beyond gallery walls, appearing on products and public projects ranging from US postage stamps to the exterior of a cruise ship, according to the statement.
