Patricio Guzmán, the documentary filmmaker who chronicled Chile's 1970s political upheaval and its aftermath in works including The Battle of Chile and Nostalgia for the Light, died Tuesday in Paris aged 85, according to Chilean news outlet Emol. The cause was cardiorespiratory arrest.
Guzmán spent his career exploring the impact of Augusto Pinochet's 1973 coup against elected president Salvador Allende, creating what he described as "metaphorical and poetic" films rather than activist work. He told the Guardian: "I'm a film-maker who was very marked by the ways of the dictator. It has remained with me for ever. I cannot leave it behind."
