Parents cut school uniform spending by 12.5% amid cost pressures, data shows

Shoppers turned to promotions and second-hand items as grocery inflation edged higher, according to market research firm Worldpanel by Numerator.

Parents and carers spent 12.5% less on school uniforms in the run-up to the start of this academic year, according to data from market research company Worldpanel by Numerator, as families sought out promotions and second-hand items to manage household costs.

The average spend on school uniform was £54.53 in the four weeks to 6 September, down from £62.29 in the same period last year, the data showed.

The figures come as separate data cited in the report showed overall grocery inflation picked up to 2.3%, from 2.1% previously.

Worldpanel by Numerator also noted that retailers including Ocado and Lidl gained market share during the period, according to the report.

The findings suggest that many households continued to seek out ways to reduce spending on essentials such as school uniforms, as cost of living pressures persisted into the new academic year.
