Pakistan warns UN Security Council of AI risks to global peace and equality

Pakistan has warned the United Nations Security Council that an unregulated boom in artificial intelligence risks widening global inequalities and threatening international peace, according to a report from the Associated Press of Pakistan.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar told the Security Council that concerted efforts are required to establish the necessary guardrails, regulations and governance frameworks around AI development.

The warning reflects growing international attention to the governance of artificial intelligence, as the technology's rapid advancement has prompted calls from a range of countries and international bodies for coordinated oversight mechanisms.

Pakistan's intervention at the Security Council places it among a number of states that have raised concerns about the uneven global distribution of AI's benefits and risks, particularly regarding the gap between countries with advanced AI capabilities and those without comparable access to the technology.

The Security Council session did not immediately result in any binding resolution on AI governance, though the discussion is expected to feed into broader ongoing international efforts to establish shared standards for the technology's development and use.
