Othman Garrido, French jihadist, sentenced to thirty years in prison
The assizes court handed down a thirty-year sentence against this former jihadist fighter, while prosecutors had sought life imprisonment.

The assizes court sentenced Othman Garrido on Tuesday to thirty years in prison for his involvement in a public execution in Syria, where he had joined jihadist ranks.
The prosecution had sought life imprisonment against this man, who the prosecution described as a "total" jihadist. The defense, however, argued for leaving him with a "prospect" of eventual release, claiming this would encourage the ideological disengagement work the defendant says he has undertaken since his incarceration.
The verdict, rendered after several days of hearings, reflects ongoing debates within the French justice system over the balance between the severity required in response to crimes committed by former jihadist fighters who have returned from conflict zones and consideration of the disengagement efforts displayed by some of the convicted.
The case is part of a broader framework of prosecutions pursued in France against nationals who joined jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq over the past decade, with several dozen similar trials having already taken place before courts specializing in terrorism cases.
Neither the defense nor the prosecution indicated immediately whether they intended to appeal the decision.
