One in five BAME NHS managers in England plan to quit amid racism, report finds
Survey by the NHS Alliance finds almost four-fifths of minority ethnic managers report racism, exclusion and barriers to career progression
The NHS in England is facing a potential exodus of managers from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, according to a new report that found widespread experiences of racism, exclusion and discrimination among staff.
The report, based on a survey carried out by the NHS Alliance, found that almost four-fifths of BAME managers said they had experienced racism, exclusion or obstacles to progressing in their careers during their working lives, according to the findings cited by the Guardian.
The survey also found that around one in five BAME managers said they were planning to leave the health service, raising concerns about the potential loss of experienced staff from an already stretched workforce.
The findings point to persistent barriers facing minority ethnic staff in NHS management roles, despite efforts by the health service to address workforce inequality in recent years.
The Guardian reported that the report highlights the scale of discrimination reported by BAME managers, though further details of the survey's methodology, sample size and the NHS's response were not immediately available.
The NHS has previously acknowledged disparities in career progression and treatment of minority ethnic staff, including through its Workforce Race Equality Standard, an annual data collection exercise intended to track and address such inequalities across the service.
